let's check it out
The research Changes in the Natural Environment: the Local Perspective of the Rural Community was conducted by me and a group of three other Anthropology students. The research was funded by the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznan as a result of a grant contest conducted at the University. It took place in a rural Polish village for a duration of one month and all quantitive research methods were fully designed and carried out by our team.
I was also a photographer for the project. Due to privacy and ethical reasons, I did not take any photographs of the people included in the research. Nevertheless, I still tried to visualize the research by capturing the important topics of our interviews. The pictures are part of the stories told to us by the village's residents. Here are some of them.
01: The garden next to the house of our oldest conversation partner (94). He only eats his own vegetables but told us that after some years he had to leave only half because it was impossible for him to take care of all the plants. Two of our interviewees said the same. The picture represents changes in rural life, as before a house garden was essential for each household's survival.
02: A herd of white cows – the only one left in the village still grazing out in the open. However, the "open" was just a portion of land fenced with wire. The residents of Mórka had told us stories about how hard it is to keep farm animals in recent times and, as a result, how most of them had to close down their animal farms years ago.
03: One of the most essential parts of the stories from Mórka was the cutting down of an old, big Poplar tree. Almost every person has a vivid memory of it, and the tree's loss impacted his/her life in one way or another. It symbolized the role that nature can play in a particular person's life as well as the whole group.
We also designed the questionnaires and conducted 20 semi-structured interviews. We have written them down and used them for the analysis of the problem.
After the research ended we used my photographs as gifts to our research partners.
The research has been presented on the University of Adam Mickiewicz Ethnology Department Instagram page. The results will be published soon in the form of an article. → See the post
